Bleach is really interesting, I would never have thought that. I just leave them in the same water, pop the flower food in if it comes with, I’m very lazy! They last as long as they last it all depends like you say. Enjoy them while you can ☺️
I’ve never understood flower food and have only just used water, and changed it if I remember. Sometimes flowers last ages sometimes not long at all but I usually put it down to the expected flower life and other conditions such as direct light, artificial heating etc
This was great though, thanks for sharing your experiment! 😁
That's interesting! Yes, there's definitely a lot of other factors that impact their vase life. I feel like heat/sunlight is the worst culprit!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I might try some more. I know ethylene gas from fresh fruit reduces vase life, but I'm not sure by how much. I did a tulip test to, but that was rather inconclusive!
Very interested to see how you go with fruit! I mean it makes sense that it would affect the flowers but I’d never actually thought of that and often have flowers on the bench by the fruit bowl!
It was absolutely drilled into us at floristry college to not have fruit nearby, but at no point have I questioned how much of a difference it makes! It might be minimal. I'll keep you posted. 🌸

My understanding has always been that a dash of bleach works because flowers need clean water to stay alive and the bleach keeps the water clean.
Haha, I'm lazy too. The appeal of flowers is that they're fleeting, so you're very right to just enjoy them whilst they last!
Ah I see! Thanks for the informative article, I really enjoyed your experiment 😊

Thank you for doing the experiment for us! All those silly packets of plant 'food' being added to bouquets. More plastic waste and cost!
